1. How successful is communication between the characters? Explain why.

Communication between the characters Craig and Perry is unsuccessful because (“Explain”) they don’t understand each other. Craig wants to know when the group is going to meet, but Perry doesn’t understand the question since (= puisque) the group has been meeting. If Craig had wanted to study, he should have gone to the library.

2. Explain what this reveals about the relationship between Craig and the other students.

This reveals that the other students study together and have the same goales, whereas Craig is on the outside of the group / is an outsider.

K. Focus on lines 18 to 23.

Give 2 particularities of the students in Fredonia, according to Craig. Justify each particularity with a quote.

• The posture: We can see her arms raised and wide open, which shows her enthusiasm. She is smiling, like the audience in the background.

M. Explain what this photograph may suggest about Harvard.

The photograph suggests that Harvard is a welcoming place, a dynamic university where everybody can succeed. The fact that it is the meeting of the Alumni association proves its sense of community.

N. What is the common point between the three documents?

The 3 documents are about university life.

O. Compare and contrast the visions of Adriana, Craig and Oprah Winfrey on this common point.

“Compare and contrast” veut dire qu’il faut que tu trouves des points communs et des différences entre les visions des différentes personnes.

• Adriana and Oprah Winfrey both (point commun) have positive vision of university,
• for different reasons: Adriana sees university as a place where she can live her passion as a key to happiness, while (= alors que) Oprah Winfrey sees university and its community as the key to success.
• On the contrary, Craig has a negative experience of university, where he is an outsider and feels excluded.

Expression écrite des annales d’anglais LV2 2019

You are the president of the students’ union at Gardner-Webb University and the school year has just started. Write a speech for Freshman Week to convince new students to join a club.

• Ne pas oublier les spécificités d’un discours : Un étudiant s’adresse aux nouveaux arrivants.
• Ne pas hésiter à utiliser les documents du corpus pour vous inspirer :
• Le Document A donne de nombreux arguments en faveur des clubs et associations universitaires, ce qui est exactement ce que veut prouver le president du BDE (= students’ union).

Le discours devrait être composé comme ceci :

• remercier le public qui t’écoute (pour bien montrer que vous avez noté la spécificité de l’exercice)
• leur souhaiter la bienvenue à l’université Gardner-Webb puisque ce sont de nouveaux étudiants.
• présenter les différentes associations et clubs qui existent au sein de l’université
• citer plusieurs arguments qui soulignent qu’ils sont très importants dans l’équilibre de vie des étudiants et pour leur permettre d’avoir une vie sociale épanouissante.
• rappeler ton rôle en tant que président du BDE d’être à leur disposition s’ils ont des questions et leur indiquer comment trouver des informations sur les clubs et sur la façon de s’y inscrire.

Il faut faire un plan du discours au brouillon. L’épreuve est courte, donc rien de trop long, mais tu dois ménager un paragraphe par idée.

Ne pas oublier le support : Il s’agit d’une lettre de motivation, donc

• Le style doit être formel : formules de politesse

Au début :

• “To whom it may concern” / “Dear Sir” / “Dear Madam”

À la fin :

• “I am looking forward to hearing from you and hope you will consider my application favourably,
• Best regards,
• Signature”

Dans ta copie :

• Tu dois présenter des arguments qui te poussent à candidater à cette université en particulier.
• Puis présenter des aspects de ta personnalité, de ton parcours, de tes ambitions qui justifient qu’ils devraient envisager de t’accepter.

• Discuss the following statement: “True education does not only consist in acquiring knowledge, but also in building one’s personality.”

Il faut faire un plan au brouillon. L’épreuve est courte donc 2 parties suffiront.

Ne pas hésiter à s’inspirer des documents du corpus.

Première partie : Parler de la façon dont l’éducation permet de développer des capacités autres qu’académiques, comme le montrent les document A, avec les activités musicales des étudiants de ASU, et le document C, avec la communauté que représente les alumni de Harvard.

Deuxième partie : Nuancer (c’est ce que “Discuss” invite à faire en général) le propos

mais aussi sur un plan plus psychologique, le cas de Craig dans le document B dont la difference de caractère d’avec les autres étudiants lui apprend à être plus indépendant.
